Annual Review
The once-per-year IEP meeting where the team reviews progress and updates the plan.
An Annual Review is the IEP team meeting that must occur at least once every 12 months. At the annual review, the team revisits the student's progress on current goals, reviews whether services have been effective, discusses any new concerns, and writes a new IEP for the following year.
The review is distinct from the triennial re-evaluation. An annual review updates the plan; a re-evaluation (every three years) reassesses whether the student still qualifies for special education.
Case managers are responsible for scheduling the meeting, inviting required participants (parent, gen-ed teacher, sped teacher, district rep, someone who can interpret evaluation results, and — when appropriate — the student and related service providers), and ensuring the new IEP is written and implemented before the prior IEP expires. Missing an annual review is a compliance violation with real consequences.
