ESY
Also: Extended School Year
Special education services provided outside the regular school year, usually in summer, for students who would otherwise regress.
Extended School Year (ESY) services are special education and related services provided to a student with a disability outside of the normal school calendar — typically during summer break — at no cost to the family. ESY is required by IDEA when a student needs these services in order to receive FAPE.
The most common standard for ESY eligibility is regression-recoupment: if the student loses critical skills during school breaks and cannot recover them in a reasonable time once school resumes, ESY is appropriate. Other factors include the severity of the disability, emerging skills that would be lost without continued instruction, and behavioral or self-sufficiency concerns.
ESY is not summer school, and it is not meant to provide year-round enrichment. It is targeted maintenance of specific goals identified in the IEP.
