IEE
Also: Independent Educational Evaluation
An evaluation conducted by a qualified examiner outside the school district, which parents can request at public expense if they disagree with the district's evaluation.
An Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) is an evaluation conducted by a qualified examiner who is not employed by the school district. A parent who disagrees with the district's evaluation has the right under IDEA to request an IEE at public expense.
The district can either pay for the IEE or initiate a due-process hearing to demonstrate that its own evaluation was appropriate. If the district pays, the IEE must use the same criteria the district would apply to its own evaluations (qualifications of the examiner, location, cost). The results must be considered by the IEP team, though the team is not obligated to adopt the IEE's recommendations.
Parents can also obtain an IEE at their own expense at any time; those results must similarly be considered.
